! Subject to a background/suitability investigation. DUTIES:
The ! Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System is seeking a full time academic Geriatrician to serve as Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care (ACOS GEC). The role of this position would be to manage the Geriatric and Extended Care Service at the VA. This service includes a growing primary care program (with over 1700 patients enrolled in the Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT), multiple consultation clinics (including outpatient Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM), memory, and activity promotion clinics), an active inpatient geriatric consultation service, an Adult Day Health Care program (enrollment 132 patients), and a 156 bed Community Living Center that includes Respite Care beds, a 20 bed inpatient GEM unit as well as a Dementia and a Geropsychiatric Unit. Each program has a physician director who reports to the ACOS GEC. This position reports to the Chief of Staff and supervises five MDs, nine APNs, and two administrative positions within the Geri! atrics and Extended Care program.

In addition to service and research, teaching is the other major focus of the VA Geriatrics and Extended Care program. Geriatric fellows, medical residents, medical students, and students from multiple allied health professions rotate through the VA each year. Geriatrics is included in all four years of the medical school curriculum. However, the most intensive training occurs during the 4 th year when all medical students participate in a mandatory four-week rotation in geriatrics. As part of this rotation, students spend approximately half of their time at the VA. The ACOS GEC plays a major role in maintaining the vitality of this teaching program at the VA by ensuring that the students are successfully integrated into each of the clinical programs.

The Geriatric and Extended Care programs are closely affiliated with the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the VA and the Donald W. Reynolds Depar! tment of Geriatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.! Within the combined VA and university geriatrics programs, there are 22 physicians, 18 APNs, and 17 PhD scientists with many faculty members having appointments at each institution. Like the VA, the University has a similar array of robust clinical programs. The GRECC and the Department of Geriatrics also have very strong research and education programs that provide ample opportunities for collaboration and a depth of resources that can be mobilized to help in program development activities. The VA clinical programs serve as the foundation for many research studies.
